Are you a Black Potterhead? Are you still waiting on your Hogwarts letter? The Hogwarts BSU project is for Black fans of Harry Potter who want to imagine life as a Black person in the wizarding world. If you’re ready to take your fandom energy into a creative space, submit your stories, songs, drawings, photographs, and more!
For ideas and examples, check out our previous Hogwarts BSU pieces.
Guidelines: Fanfiction is a great space to create because you can essentially do whatever you want! We do, however, have a few parameters to guide you in the process.
- Pieces can be in any form: prose, poetry, song, fanart, video, etc.
- Pieces should range from 10-15 pages. (Longer stories are welcome, but will be published in installments).
- Pieces must accurately use terminology from the wizarding world. However, a part of this project is to build out what is lacking from the world, so inventing your own terminology, spells, and worldbuilding details is encouraged!
- Pieces do not have to be set during the Harry Potter years, or at Hogwarts itself.
- Contributors may submit more than one piece.
- Unlike our Critical Companion series, we are unable to pay for Hogwarts BSU submissions, as we do not own Harry Potter.
- We accept submissions on a rolling basis.
Process:
- Pitch your idea — this can be in the form of an idea or a full draft.
- We give feedback and help you build out your piece.
- Revise!
- Send back your piece with a short bio (please include your Hogwarts House) and social media information.
- We publish!
All submissions should be sent to pitches [at] blackgirlscreate [dot] org. Please make sure to include “Hogwarts BSU” in the subject header.
